Where have they gone?

Where have all the ADHD bloggers gone?  Oh, I find links to ADHD blogs in directories and in blog searches, but when I go to visit these blogs and see what other people are saying I more frequently than not am greeted with one of two things:

  1. Abandoned Blogs. A blog that has more cobwebs and dust bunnies floating around in it than content.
  2. Page not Found. It’s just gone.  kaput.  No More.

In the first case it makes me wonder whether or not the bloggers were ADHD themselves and have simply forgotten about the blog, or lost interest and moved on to something else.  ADD-ers are notorious for this type of behavior, so I suppose that I really shouldn’t be surprised.  And to be honest, I’ve done the same thing with this domain a few times myself.  but I always find that I need to come back to it.  I started it for a reason, and I’m determined to keep putting information out there for people, especially since all the other sources on the subject that existed when ADHD was a hot topic in the media have pretty much gone silent now that there’s not a lot of money to be made by writing about a condition that most of the world would rather not hear about any longer.

Bipolar Disorder took over for ADHD, then depression in general, and now the public eye has turned to other issues as well.  After all, the communal attention span of the American public makes that of a kid with ADHD look pretty intense.  The public eye is turned to what’s in the media, or to what they think the media might be hiding from them.  If the media isn’t covering the problem anymore, it must have gone away, right?

Teachers seem to be getting complacent as well.  Ritalin and Adderall are out there to solve the problem.  Unfortunately, the same teachers that hold this opinion are also very much to blame for the over diagnosis of ADD, ADHD and Bipolar Disorder.  It’s far simpler for them to have a student who might simply be a bit hyperactive put on medication.  Once sedated, said student isn’t a problem any longer. Problem solved,  the Doctor made his money, the teacher has another nice, controllable zombie, and the world is happy, right?

Wrong, Damnit!

I suppose I’ve answered my own question.  ADHD isn’t a hot topic any more.  It’s moved to the background just like AIDS did, just like memories of the cold war.  the public isn’t interested any longer, so bloggers have moved on to other topics, at least in America.  Other bloggers whom I’ve known over the years stopped writing on the subject when their children with ADHD grew up and moved out of the house.  That at least makes sense to me.

I for one haven’t forgotten that the problem exists.  I have ADHD. So does my wife, my dearest friend in the world, My stepson, my oldest son, and my youngest son though not old enough to diagnose, is already displaying many of the signs that his mind is racing, even at just a little over  year old.

I’ll be writing on this topic for a while to come.  I hope you’ll join me on the ride, it’s sure to be an interesting one.
