Apparently even search engine spiders get ADHD

By Jerry • Apr 1st, 2008 • Category: ADHD Articles

At least that’s what was stated at search engine squaretable, where they claim that the search engine crawler must have ADHD, because it visited some sites up to 1,000 times in a single day.  While this was most likely some sort of glitch in Yahoo!’s algorithms, I find the statement itself to be a bit over the top.

We all know that ADHD in most cases causes a difficuly in paying attention.  The unfortunate side effect of this is that the public in general are using the term to describe absolutely everything memory related.  I feel that this lessens the reality…

Using Exercise to Treat ADHD

By Jerry • Mar 28th, 2008 • Category: ADHD Articles, Featured

Psychiatrist John Ratey claims exercise is “the single most important tool people have to optimize brain function.” Dr. Ratey is a Harvard University professor and an expert on ADHD.

His thoughts:

If you get your body in shape, your mind will follow.

Dr. Ratey details his findings in working with exercise and the brain in his new book Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain which was published in January by Little, Brown.

In this article by L.A. Times reporter Shari Roan, Dr. Ratey answers several in-depth questions on the topic, which I found very informative.

My opinion:

Though it is…

Make understanding, not war.

By Jerry • Feb 19th, 2008 • Category: ADHD Articles

Make Love Not WarLast week I shared my opinions on a post that author and life coach Ronit Baras made on her blog Family Matters.  Miss Baras and I agree on some points and disagree on others, this is quite normal when discussing ADHD or behavioral disorders in general and does not cause me any undue concern.  Several of my readers took the time to leave their opinions as well, which I appreciate and hopefully Miss Baras appreciates this as well.   She seems to.

Miss Baras has made another post following this topic, and while I don’t agree with everything stated in it,…

Give me music or give me death. Or: Methods for improving productivity.

By Jerry • Feb 13th, 2008 • Category: ADHD Articles, Articles

I recently wrote that I had finally figured out the reason that I have been unable to keep up with the day-to-day task of writing here.  In actuality the problem had affected my productivity far more profoundly than just interfering with my writing habits, it had affected every aspect of my life.  It was not due to a lack of motivation, a lack of interest, or any desire to avoid delving into a subject that is very personal to me.  My failure was due to one very specific aspect of my life being out of kilter.  It was due to…

Schoolpop: Fundraising for Schools of all Sizes

By Jerry • Feb 13th, 2008 • Category: ADHD Articles, Articles, Product Spotlight

It’s a fact of life that many kids with ADHD end up in specialized schools, private schools or even continuation schools.  If that is the case in your life then you know that raising tuition or even raising funds for extracurricular activities can be a challenge for both the school and the parents, but ultimately these funding issues ultimately impact the children attending the school.

If you have been looking for methods to raise money for private schools, public school activities or other educational institutions, then Schoolpop’s programs may be right for you.  Their non-traditional fundraiser programs are really quite…

Life coach wonders if ADHD is contagious

By Jerry • Feb 11th, 2008 • Category: ADHD Articles

Ronit Baras is a life coach and author of the book “Be Special, be Yourself for Teenagers“.  She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and she gives every indication of believing that most kids with ADHD not only do not have a disorder at all, but that their disruptive behavior can be treated simply by letting these children “move around more”.

I not only completely disagree with Miss Baras on the previous point, but I take contention with several other statements she makes in her blog entry titled “ADHD Must Be Contagious“.  Allow me to point out my specific objections.…

Attack of the shineys

By Jerry • Nov 27th, 2007 • Category: ADHD Articles

I had to go and mention that I had methods to combat the shineys, didn’t I. In the global scheme of things that must be akin to saying those famous last words:

At least it can’t get any worse!

And then of course, it does.

The day following my last post on the subject, the shineys arrived. Apparently they read this blog as well and for the next three days I struggled to do even the simplest of tasks. I had no concentration, no focus and no direction. I adhere to a strict daily routine to avoid just such problems, but…

Emergency finacial distress, Payday Loans and ADHD

By Jerry • Nov 26th, 2007 • Category: ADHD Articles, Articles, Product Spotlight

Let’s say you or your family has a sudden, pressing need for money, but payday is still a week and a half away. What options do you have?

  • Is there a family member you can turn to? I’d like to think so, but that’s not always feasible.
  • Can you get a loan against the house/car/property or other collateral. Maybe, but if you need less than a thousand dollars, that can be difficult, and may come with restrictions on waht that money can be spent on.
  • you could always grab some of that wad stuffed in the matress… I know. I KNOW! you…

As many of us know, living with ADHD pushes the envelope of maintaining consistency and regularity in our lives. Just when we think we have a handle on it, something in life shifts to keep us off balance. Learning to manage ADHD in ourselves or in the lives of our children can be as emotionally frustrating as it is rewarding. This article draws insight and direction from the real experts in the field of ADHD: the fathers who live with and help support…

Living With The Shinies

By Jerry • Nov 14th, 2007 • Category: ADHD Articles, Articles

The shinies. To anyone with ADHD this is probably a pretty familiar term. to those without a shiny problem, let me take a moment to explain.

The shinies has become a kind of made up definition for anything that draws your attention from the task at hand. It has been picked up by the ADHD community, especially the adult ADHD community, as our own way of describing the response we give when something interesting, but unrelated to what we’re doing comes along. I’ve seen the term used on graphic shirts, bumper stickers and coffee mugs. I hear it used in general conversation…
